Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife destination, renowned globally for having one of the highest densities of leopards in the world.
If you are planning a trip to Sri Lanka, a jeep safari through Yala is likely at the top of your bucket list. However, because it is a raw, untamed wilderness, going in prepared makes all the difference. Here are our top tips for ensuring your safari is a massive success.
1. Go Early or Go Late
Wildlife is most active during the cooler parts of the day. The absolute best times to spot elusive predators like leopards and sloth bears are during the "golden hours"—just after sunrise (around 6:00 AM) or right before sunset. Mid-day heat often drives animals deep into the shade where they are impossible to see.
2. Bring the Right Gear
While our jeeps are comfortable, the jungle is dusty! We highly recommend wearing earth-toned clothing (greens, browns, and khakis) so you blend into the environment. Don't forget your sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat that won't blow off in a moving jeep, and of course, a camera with a good zoom lens!
Pro Tip: Silence your phones and avoid sudden loud noises when approaching wildlife. The quieter the jeep, the longer the animals will stick around for photos!
3. Trust Your Guide
Our drivers at Senu Safari have years of experience tracking animal prints, listening for alarm calls from monkeys and deer, and predicting where a leopard might emerge. Trust their instincts, follow their rules, and enjoy the ride!
