If seeing a wild Asian elephant up close is your dream, Udawalawe National Park is the ultimate destination in Sri Lanka.
Often compared to the sprawling savannas of Africa, Udawalawe is a vast sanctuary of open grasslands and water reservoirs. Because the terrain is less dense than other parks, wildlife spotting is incredibly rewarding. Here is what makes Udawalawe an unmissable part of your Sri Lankan adventure.
1. Guaranteed Elephant Sightings
Udawalawe is home to a massive permanent herd of over 500 elephants. Unlike other parks where elephants migrate seasonally, the majestic herds here stay year-round due to the abundance of water at the Udawalawe Reservoir. It is incredibly common to see mothers guiding their calves, or large groups bathing and playing in the water.
2. A Bird Watcher’s Paradise
While the elephants are the stars of the show, the park is a globally recognized haven for bird watchers. The wetlands attract flocks of beautiful species including the Sri Lankan Junglefowl, majestic eagles, hornbills, and vibrant peacocks displaying their feathers.
Our Guide's Tip: Book a morning safari! The lighting across the reservoir is spectacular for photography, and you will catch the birds and elephants at their most active before the mid-day heat sets in.
3. The Elephant Transit Home
Located just outside the park boundaries, the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home rescues and rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves. Visiting during their feeding times is a heartwarming experience and a great way to support ethical wildlife conservation efforts in Sri Lanka.
